Heat Dome: It Explains the Sweltering Temperatures

As scorching temperatures grip parts of the US, particularly across the Midwest and Northeast regions, scientists have been discussing “heat domes.”

Imagine a massive bubble forming above us - that's essentially a heat dome! According to Dr. Ken Kunkel, Research Professor of Atmospheric Sciences at NC State University, "a heat dome" refers specifically to events occurring within our planet's atmosphere." When high-pressure systems develop aloft, surrounding air sinks down, warms due to compression, creating sweltering temps close to Earth.

Currently, such a heat dome blankets large portions of Eastern America; however, exact borders aren't sharply outlined yet, says Dr. Kunkel. Meanwhile, the National Weather Service predicts severe heatwaves hitting hardest along the Ohio River valley region plus northeastern territories.
