Sinkhole Opens Up at Football Field

A massive sinkhole, estimated to be around 100 feet deep and equally wide, emerged suddenly in the middle of a field at Gordon Moore Park in Alton, Illinois, causing a large light pole to vanish into the earth. The incident occurred directly above a limestone mine on Wednesday morning, as reported by local sources.

Alton Mayor David Goins expressed relief over the absence of injuries, stating, "No one was on the field at the time, and no one was hurt, and that's the most important thing."

The mine beneath the park is operated by New Frontier Materials, which acknowledged the occurrence of a "surface subsidence" in a recent statement. The community is particularly thankful that the sinkhole did not appear during last week's Marquette Explorers Soccer Camp, which saw 60 to 70 participants on the field each day from 9am to 11am.
