Wait a Second, it’s Not Flu Season!

Is it possible to catch the flu during the warmer months? Absolutely, says Dr. Wagner recently to USA Today. "Contracting the flu during spring and summer is less common than during the fall and winter," but it's not impossible. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that while flu season peaks during the colder months, influenza viruses can be detected year-round in the U.S. The predictability of flu activity has also been impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, making year-round vigilance necessary.

If you find yourself feeling flu-like symptoms in the summer, the approach to treatment doesn't differ much from other times of the year. According to Wagner, treatment "typically involves rest, hydration and over-the-counter medications to alleviate symptoms such as fever and body aches." However, he advises seeing a healthcare provider to rule out co-infections and to discuss the best treatment plan, which might include antiviral drugs if taken early enough—ideally within two days of symptom onset, as recommended by the CDC.
