Love Going Swimming? Read What You Might Catch…
As we dive headfirst into another scorching summer season, millions will flock to their nearest community pool or waterpark, seeking refuge from the heat. However, amidst the fun-filled splashing around lurks a hidden threat - germy waters! Yes, despite the presence of disinfectants such as chlorine and bromine, our beloved watering holes harbor nasty pathogens capable of ruining our sun-kissed escapades.
According to Jasen Kunz, Healthy Water Program Lead at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Waterborne Disease Prevention Branch, "you can get swimming-related illnesses... [from] water contaminated with germs." Moreover, sickness can arise due to exposure to harsh chemicals present in the water itself or those released through evaporation, which subsequently transform into harmful gases suspended in the atmosphere, warns Kunz.
The most common issues include swimmer’s ear and germs such as Norovirus and E. Coli. The chlorine doesn’t kill everything, so the best thing you can do is ensure that the pool you’re swimming in is serviced regularly.
