Heat Waves Bring More Than Just Sweat: How Extreme Temperatures Worsen Air Quality
As record-shattering highs grip the nation, claiming lives in cities like Portland and Death Valley, Americans face not only sweltering temperatures but also suffocating smog. In this perfect storm of weather woes, citizens struggle to catch their breath—quite literally. But what drives this deadly duo?
At its core lies the insidious interplay between blistering sunbeams and stagnant air masses. As Dr. Mariani-Anna Kioumourtzoglou, Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health, explains, intense sunshine spawns ground-level ozone—a noxious brew concocted within Earth's own atmosphere. This pernicious pollutant tends to linger above urban centers during torrid spells marked by feeble breezes.
"The pollution can stay over a city," warns Kioumourtzoglou.
Dr. Peter DeCarlo, Associate Professor of Environmental Health and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, further illuminates this process: "Summertime conditions, where it's hot and there's a lot of sunlight, kind of push that chemistry to go faster and make more ozone."
