The Evanston, Illinois, city council has decided to broaden the scope of its Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) handouts despite lackluster results thus far.
On Monday evening, five out of nine council members voted to relax an age requirement for kids enrolled in the initiative after complaints emerged about limited participation among local families living in census tract 8092 – specifically areas known for high levels of unemployment and low-income earners.
Councilors Krissie Harris and Clare Kelley championed expanding access before casting ballots, citing widespread deprivation throughout the community rather than focusing solely on specific neighborhoods.
While proponents claim success stories abound nationwide—exceeding 100 such initiatives rolled out nationally post-2019—critics argue numerous hurdles persist, including uncertain long-term financing commitments alongside looming litigation threats against several projects.
