No Selfies with the Depressed Bear, Please
Only in Florida…
The Walton County Sheriff's Office in northern Florida has urged motorists to refrain from attempting to snap selfies with a visibly distressed bear. Situated in the Florida Panhandle, the sheriff's office took to Facebook last Thursday to caution the public against approaching the bear, which they described as showing "severe stress" and being "clearly not in the mood for pictures."
The post humorously noted, "Famous last words, 'If not friend, why friend shaped?’"
Lisa Thompson, a spokesperson for the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, reported that although bear biologists and officers were dispatched to the scene where the bear was resting, it had already moved on to the adjacent woods by the time they arrived. "The bear did not appear to be injured based on images shared with our staff," Thompson stated. She speculated that the bear might have been merely overheated and was resting before continuing its journey.
Authorities have consistently warned the public against interacting with bears, emphasizing that feeding or photographing these animals can lead to dangerous situations. During the warmer months, bears are more active and often venture closer to urban settings.
Mike Orlando, Bear Management Program coordinator for the wildlife agency, explained, "Juvenile or yearling bears – between the ages of 1 1/2 -2 1/2 – start dispersing in spring and summer each year." He advised, "The best thing people can do if they see a bear in an unexpected area is to give them plenty of space and to never approach or feed them and they will typically move along on their own."
