“History is a jangle of accidents, blunders, surprises and absurdities, and so is our knowledge of it, but if we are to report it at all we must impose some order upon it.”

SNL Wants Steve Martin Back to Take on Role of Tim Walz

The SNL cast has a long history of doing political shorts, and they need someone to play the role of Tim Walz. With Maya Rudolph playing Kamala, Steve Martin seemed like the obvious choice for Tim.

"I wanted to say no and, by the way, he wanted me to say no," Martin revealed in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times. His candid response highlights a mutual understanding of his limitations in this particular comedic arena. "Lorne, I’m not an impressionist. You need someone who can really nail the guy," Martin explained, underscoring his self-awareness and professional integrity in recognizing the need for a more suitable talent for the role.

The commitment required for such a portrayal on "SNL" is not a one-off appearance but an ongoing obligation that Martin feels he cannot fulfill. "It’s ongoing. It’s not like you do it once and get applause and never do it again," he stated, further clarifying the demands of the role which he believes would be better served by a true impressionist. "Again, they need a real impressionist to do that. They’re going to find somebody really, really good. I’d be struggling," Martin added, setting the stage for "SNL" to scout for a more fitting impersonator who can consistently deliver the comedic goods.
