Turkey Steps Up as Mediator in Ethiopia-Somalia Tensions Over Somaliland Deal
In a significant diplomatic endeavor, Turkey has once again positioned itself as a mediator, hosting a second round of discussions on Monday aimed at defusing the escalating tensions between Ethiopia and Somalia. The core of the dispute is a contentious agreement that Ethiopia entered with the self-declared independent region of Somaliland, which has been a point of contention since its announcement in January.
The agreement in question allowed Ethiopia, a landlocked nation with a burgeoning population of over 120 million, to lease a 20-kilometer stretch of Somaliland's coastline. This strategic move would enable Ethiopia to establish a marine force base, enhancing its maritime capabilities. In a reciprocal gesture, Ethiopia would formally recognize Somaliland's claim to independence, a stance that Somalia vehemently opposes, viewing it as a direct threat to its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The situation has reached such a critical point that Somalia has expressed its readiness to engage in military conflict over the issue, underlining the high stakes involved in this regional dispute.
In response to the growing crisis, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan orchestrated separate meetings in Ankara with his counterparts from Ethiopia and Somalia, Taye Atske Selassie and Ahmed Moallim Fiqi, respectively. The discussions were conducted through proximity talks, with Turkish officials facilitating communication between the two sides, who did not engage directly.
