Blinken vs. Tlaib: Celebrating the Geneva Convention
In a striking display of dissent, Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., has openly criticized the State Department's recent acknowledgment of the Geneva Conventions anniversary, questioning the Biden administration's commitment to the principles of the historic treaties amidst ongoing conflicts involving Israel.
"Is this a joke?" Tlaib expressed on X, responding to a statement by Secretary of State Antony Blinken commemorating the 75th anniversary of the Geneva Conventions of 1949. These treaties are crucial in setting international standards for the humane treatment of civilians and prisoners during times of war.
Tlaib's critique did not stop at mere rhetorical questions. She sharply condemned the U.S. government's support for Israel, stating, "You supported sending more U.S. made bombs being used to commit war crimes. The government of Israel bombed hospitals, schools, and tents full of displaced Palestinians. How can you say you are for respecting international human rights laws?" Her comments underscore a profound dissatisfaction with the U.S. role in what she perceives as violations of international law by Israel.
Secretary Blinken, in his statement, had emphasized America's dedication to international humanitarian law: "Today we commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions of 1949. The United States reaffirms our steadfast commitment to respecting international humanitarian law and mitigating suffering in armed conflict. We call on others to do the same."
