Kim Jong Un Readies to Open North Korea to Tourism
North Korea is set to cautiously reopen its doors to international tourists after a prolonged near-total isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Beijing-based Koryo Tours, a leading agency in organizing trips to the reclusive state, has announced that it will resume limited tour operations to North Korea starting in December this year.
The initial phase of tourism will be restricted to the city of Samjiyon, a location recently developed to attract tourists. This decision marks a significant, albeit cautious, step towards reviving the North Korean tourism sector, which has been dormant since the country sealed its borders at the onset of the global health crisis in early 2020.
"Having waited for over 4 years to make this announcement, Koryo Tours is very excited for the opening of North Korean tourism once again," the agency expressed in a recent press release. This announcement underscores a tentative optimism about the gradual normalization of activities within North Korea.
Samjiyon, the chosen site for these initial tours, was last in the international spotlight during the 2018 filming of the British documentary series "Michael Palin in North Korea." The city's selection as the starting point for the resumption of tourism indicates its strategic importance and readiness to welcome foreign visitors.
The decision to reopen tourism partially comes as North Korea has been grappling with significant challenges since the pandemic began. The country's self-imposed isolation was a drastic measure to prevent the spread of the virus, given its limited medical infrastructure to handle an outbreak. This closure has had substantial economic and social impacts, given the importance of foreign visitors to the local economy, particularly in terms of currency inflows.
