Taliban Rule Continues to Plague Life in Afghanistan

Three years following the Taliban's forceful seizure of Kabul on August 15, 2021, Afghanistan has plunged deeper into a humanitarian abyss, with the regime's draconian policies stripping away the rights of women and isolating the nation from global support.

Currently, a staggering one-fourth of the Afghan population battles acute food insecurity, while over half are in desperate need of humanitarian aid. The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) reports that nearly 70% of Afghans are subsistence insecure, lacking consistent access to essentials such as food, water, housing, and healthcare. The economic framework of Afghanistan has nearly disintegrated post-Taliban takeover, primarily due to the cessation of international aid from initiatives like the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund.

The Taliban's adherence to extreme ideologies has only worsened the economic turmoil, with severe restrictions imposed on women, barring them from employment and educational opportunities. This regression prompts a critical examination of whether the current state of Afghanistan is deteriorating from the pre-9/11 era.

Despite not receiving direct funding from international humanitarian organizations, the Taliban has devised methods to divert aid to bolster its regime. This was evident during their recent parade at Bagram Air Base, the former pinnacle of U.S. military presence in Afghanistan, where they flaunted American military equipment left behind in the hasty withdrawal.
