Identity Theft and Fraud in 2024: A Growing Concern for Americans
In 2023, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reported a staggering 1 million complaints of identity theft, alongside over 2.6 million complaints related to fraud, culminating in financial losses exceeding $10 billion. This alarming trend highlights the increasing vulnerability of consumers in the digital age.
Among the various categories of fraud complaints, imposter scams emerged as the most prevalent. In these scams, criminals masquerade as trusted entities—be it a familiar business or a government agency—to deceive victims into transferring money or divulging personal information.
In 2023, more than 856,000 imposter scam complaints were filed, marking a 12% increase from the previous year. Online shopping scams followed closely, with over 376,000 complaints, reflecting a 3% rise compared to 2022. Investment-related scams ranked fourth, with 110,388 cases, but they accounted for the highest proportion of monetary losses (75%) and the greatest total financial losses.
When ranked by the number of complaints filed per 100,000 residents, the District of Columbia topped the list in 2023, with 478 complaints per 100,000 residents, totaling 3,268 complaints for the year—an 11% increase from 2,932 in 2022. Georgia followed with 458 complaints per 100,000 residents, totaling 48,614 complaints, a 19% decrease from 60,197 in 2022. Florida, Nevada, and Connecticut rounded out the top five states for identity theft complaints.

I have a confession to make...
Even though I try to eat well, exercise, and manage stress…
... I still don't get enough fruits and vegetables each day.
I know that fruits and vegetables are good for you. If you want to stay healthy, they're the best health insurance you can get.
But frankly, life gets in the way. I get busy with work, family, travel, and I just don't keep up.
So for years, I've been using a simple, 60-second hack to get the added fruits and vegetables I need.
But now I've found something even better.
Yours for Better Health,
Dr. Greg Eckel
