Georgia Mayor Faces Felony Charges for Allegedly Providing Alcohol to Inmates
In a troubling turn of events, the mayor of Thomson, Georgia, Benjamin "Benji" Cary Cranford, 52, has been indicted on felony charges for allegedly attempting to provide a bottle of gin to a state prison work crew. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) arrested Cranford on Wednesday following an indictment issued by the McDuffie County Superior Court.
The charges stem from an incident on June 3, when Cranford reportedly drove to a local store, purchased a bottle of Seagram's Extra Dry Gin, and left it in a ditch along Cobbham Road, strategically placed for a work crew of inmates from the Jefferson County Correctional Institution to access. The Thomson Police Department initiated the investigation on June 6 after receiving allegations that Cranford had furnished alcohol to inmates.
Cranford was apprehended at Thomson City Hall by GBI agents after a city council meeting and subsequently booked into the McDuffie County Jail. He was released later that day on a $5,000 bail.
In response to the situation, city spokesperson Jason Smith stated, "As we understand the charges in this case are not related to Mr. Cranford's duties as an elected official, we do not have a comment."
The implications of these charges could lead to Cranford's suspension from office, pending a recommendation from a panel to Georgia Republican Governor Brian Kemp. This follows a precedent where other officials facing felony charges, even if unrelated to their official duties, have been suspended.
