The California Gold Rush began when James W. Marshall discovered gold at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California, on January 24, 1848. His discovery set off one of the largest migrations in U.S. history.
Population Boom: In 1848, before the gold rush, California's non-Indigenous population was around 15,000. By 1852, that number had skyrocketed to over 250,000 as people from all over the world flocked to the area in search of fortune.
Forty-Niners: The term "Forty-Niners" refers to the gold seekers who arrived in 1849, a year after the initial discovery of gold. Many traveled from the eastern U.S., but also from countries like China, Chile, and Australia.
