CA Lawmakers Ban "Unhealthy" Food Additives
In yet another example of government overreach, the California legislature has approved a measure banning certain food additives commonly found in popular snack items like Flamin' Hot Cheetos and Twinkies. This latest attempt at social engineering comes under the guise of protecting children's health but ultimately serves as a power grab by bureaucrats seeking to dictate what citizens can and cannot eat.
Proponents of the bill claim that these additives contribute to increased instances of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in youngsters. However, critics contend that there is no concrete scientific evidence supporting such claims.
Democratic Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, the sponsor of the legislation, argued, "California has a responsibility to protect our students from chemicals that harm children and interfere with their ability to learn." He further stated, "As a lawmaker, a parent, and someone who struggled with ADHD, I find it unacceptable that we allow schools to serve foods with additives that are linked to hyperactivity and neurobehavioral harms."
Meanwhile, industry leaders pushed back against the proposed restrictions, citing concerns over unnecessary costs, reduced choices, and widespread consumer confusion. As noted by John Hewitt of the Consumer Brands Association, "It's unfortunate that scientifically proven, safe ingredients have been demonized for the purpose of advancing a political agenda... [T]he passage of this bill could cost schools and families money, limit choice and access, and create consumer confusion."
