This development comes amid lingering questions about the mysterious origin story of Hvaldimir, whose initial discovery in 2019 raised eyebrows due to the presence of a makeshift harness adorned with labels indicating connections to Saint Petersburg equipment. Speculation swirled regarding possible training or even espionage activities conducted by the Russian Navy.

Marine experts hypothesized that Hvaldimir may have originated from captivity before venturing into wild waters. However, following a disagreement among conservationist factions – including rival group Marine Mind – authorities ultimately decided against relocating the celebrated sea mammal back to its native Arctic habitats.
